The “A-Game” refers to the optimal mental state that a poker player should be in. Some players claim to have mastered this game by following the “A-Game” as described in the book, “Starting in Poker,” but it has not been proven.

The name “poker” is likely to be a fusion of two German and French words: pochen and poque, respectively. This is not to say that the name was a coincidence, though, as some historians speculate that it could be derived from the Persian term as nas.

Poker may also have roots in other games, such as the Chinese game as nas and the Spanish game primero. These games, like the modern variants, also require a certain level of skill and strategy.
